As Light as Air

As Light as Air is a hypnotic experience of spiritual life in Sehwan, Pakistan, a Sufi town shaped by pilgrimage, folklore, and collective ecstasy.

Every evening, an ascetic walks from door to door collecting alms to feed the poor. One by one, homes open their doors until the ritual extends to the entire town, becoming one shared act of giving. At the shrine, devotion takes many forms, from silent prayer to self-flagellation, oscillating between waves of emotions. Stories of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and his disciple Bodla Bahar drift through the film alongside these rituals, blurring the distance between past and the present. Their presence is never fully seen or explained, yet it lingers in Sehwan, felt before it is understood, giving shape to feelings that seem to exist before words.

At Malang Mach, a communal space, pilgrims and wanderers arrive carrying the intensity of the shrine. What begins as an overwhelming rush gradually settles into stillness, where shared meals, a place to sleep, and quiet companionship transform solitude into solidarity.

During Dhamal, drums and flute draw the crowd into an ecstatic rhythm until individual bodies dissolve into one another. Longing becomes surrender, surrender becomes trance. In that trance, the weight each person carries seems to lift, if only for a moment, leaving them as light as air.
